Connections to the Phalanx

The theme of this book is to stick together and to keep family together.  These people rely on each other to stay alive and keep up moral.  They are traveling across the country to find work and have all the odds against them.  When Al marries Aggie Wainwright the two families begin traveling together in order to benefit each other.

A major example of this theme or of breaking this theme is when Tom must leave the family.  Because Ruthie opened her mouth and told about his third murder Tom must now leave the family in order to protect himeself and them.  He decides to join another phalanx, the group that Casy joined and the one that people called the Reds.
