The Moral of the Phalanx

The moral that is being conveyed through the allusions to the phalanx is that people need to stick together in order to be successful in a world where many people are against you.  The phalanx symbolizes strength and community, which is also what was a major characteristic in the lives of the migrant workers in The Grapes of Wrath.  This idea also connects to the theme of the over soul and the idea that everyone makes up a part of one big soul, which also indicates a sense of unity.
